Decision-Making v. Procrastination: What’s at Stake?
If I asked you to tell your life’s story, what would you say? Most likely you would list the highlights first. As you mentally scroll through the years, you may see flashes of childhood, carefree school days, a wedding, babies being born, and career goals fulfilled. With the highlights, there are also low points – loss, death, and maybe even divorce.
No matter what age you are, we all have defining moments that shape us into who we are. And you probably have life chapters that you would rather not share. They might be too painful or maybe they do not represent you at your best.
We all go through life transitions. But did you know you have control over how life transitions shape you? Either you get all you can out of a life transition or you remain stuck in the pain.
But one thing is for certain, you have to make decisions to move forward. Procrastination keeps you stuck. Procrastination is the opposite of decision.
You are a decision-maker whether you believe it or not. Not making a decision simply means something or someone else determines your results. It’s a decision in itself.
If your life was a movie projected on a screen, where do you see yourself in the script? Are you the director, determining the scenes? Or are the credits rolling and you cannot find your name?
If you feel as if you don’t have a role in your life script then fate is determining your results. This is the point when most people feel stuck in indecision. Indecision comes at a high price because…
• Indecision equals chaos
• Indecision sets up internal conflict
• Indecision causes paralysis
To combat indecision you must identify what you intend to create. Take a minute and ask yourself what do I want? Do you have a vision for your future?“ Want is a prerequisite for making a decision” (Bob Proctor).
Maybe you don’t know, but how can you possibly improve your life when you don’t have a target to hit?
Your mind will answer any question that you put forward. Answers will pop up when you ask, “What do I want?” Seconds later you may hear a rebuttal, the buts, the cannots, and all the reasons why your vision is impossible.
And those are the results you will get. It will be impossible to accomplish a dream if you do not believe in its possibility.
You are God’s highest creative being and if you can “image” it, you can create it. When we know our “why” or the set destination, we eliminate conflict. It will bring order to the mind. It’s making a decision even if you do not know how you will get there.
Decision brings order to the mind. Procrastination brings chaos and confusion; it’s the opposite of “decision”.
We wrestle with, should I stay or should I go? Should I buy or sell? Should I hire an attorney or get a mediator? Should I respond this way or that way? Should I pursue this opportunity or stay where I am?
These are critical decisions that determine your future. They require thoughtful consideration, but they can also keep you paralyzed, stuck in fear, and then chaos, worry, and internal conflict set in.
If you are stuck in indecision, begin by answering these 5 questions.
• What do I want?
• What do I need to know to get there?
• Who can help me achieve this?
• How can I be solution-oriented versus problem-focused?
• Am I letting my present resources determine how I dream?
The purpose of the questions is to get you to dream big by “imaging” what you intend to create. Start by writing it down. Your life on paper probably looks drastically different than what you are living. That’s OK. Do not let your current situation influence your vision. If you do not like your current results, do not let the resources or lack thereof dictate how you “image” your future. Freeze frame this vision, hold onto it and
Dream out loud!
Also, another critical step in decision-making is educating yourself. The more information you gather, the more confidence you will gain. Uncertainty creates fear. Use resources or people to help you achieve your goal. Much like creating your own dream team, there are people out there who can help guide you to where you want to be. Do not over-complicate things and try to do it alone. There’s no reason to reinvent the wheel, look at others who have achieved their goals and observe what they’re doing.
Focus on what you intend to create versus what is not working. Are you looking for a solution or are you looping on the problem? If this is something that you struggle with, get my free guide to Conquering Loops of Worry.
Studies show that successful people reach decisions promptly and are slow to change these decisions. The opposite of decision is procrastination and “Procrastination is a common enemy that practically everybody must conquer” (Napoleon Hill).
How does one conquer procrastination?
By making a decision! Are you ready? It may be out of your comfort zone, which is more reason to do it. If this a hurdle that you cannot seem to move past, I can help.
Change begins with your thoughts. Together, we will identify what’s keeping you stuck. The longer you stay stuck in indecision, the more costly it will be to your health, mindset, and emotional well-being.
